The town where Maa Sita was born

Janaki Tatpurnagri, in the heart of Mithila

Sitamarhi takes its name from Maa Sita and from the middle of the ancient kingdom of Videha — ‘the city in the middle of Maa Sita's land’. Every year pilgrims come to Punaura to stand at the exact spot where Mother Janaki is believed to have appeared from the earth, and the district still carries that story in its temple rituals, its folk songs and its Madhubani paintings.
